They are all vaguely left-wing (Mike was ill), various levels of comfortably off, financially literate, good, decent folk. Europe came up in conversation with all of them, never instigated by myself. Here's some half-quotes from my much missed tiny unrepresentative part of the land of 10 million. Make of them what you will. (Sorry if you recognise yourself and feel misquoted, I was probably drunk. And as we all know, have never let the truth etc...):
Budapest? Oh that was lovely, beautiful. Right wing nutters obviously, but more so in Vienna.
I started off 100% in the Remain camp, but now I'm about 50/50.
1/3 is like buying money for Remaining. Safest bet in history.
- I think we're more likely to vote to go. Then again, I live in Essex.
Fuck Europe – they hate us – the public of Europe have given us no fucking points in Eurovision. I've changed my mind. I'm leaving Europe. And I'm going to bed. Fuck off Australia. (To be fair that was Anne watching the voting on Eurovision, before she fled to Ireland for the weekend. I'm surprised they let her in.)
Mon dieu, the French, impossible. You just can't work with 'em. It's like it's 1974 or something. You can't sack anyone.
The thing about David Cameron is, look around the Tory party, if not him, who?
EU regulation is bonkers. We're only trying to make money, you know.
Estonia isn't in the EU.
- Nor is Turkey.
- Bulgaria is. Isn't it? Or is that Hungary?
The thing is you've got the anti-vote to account for – the negative vote against the corporate and governing elite. Which breaks down into two separate blocks of votes at either end of the middle which put together could be a whacking big protest vote against the status quo, regardless of likely outcome. On the left it's the vote against capitalism, when of course it should really be against unregulated corrupt and crony capitalism; and on the right it's a vote against democracy, when of course it should really be against unregulated corrupt and crony capitalism. Anyway, it's your round.
A big war's coming. I can smell it. Social mobility has seized up, we've gone backward in my lifetime. Maybe we need big wars. Maybe we always have.
- Like lemmings.
- Rabbits and myxomatosis
- Yep, something like that.
"Oh shit, oh shit, whatever why am I so missing Tony Blair. Because he is so charming and his clothes are so good." (Mark Wendy Deng)
No – District line, two stops, Westminster.
- Oh, I was going to go via Green Park.
- My way is better....
