This was a surprising request as she has shown zero interest in racing hitherto. Even when I used to stay with her and Mark during the Festival back in the late '90s. Anyway, we arranged to go to the Friday of Cheltenham's Open meeting but, even when arranging it, we both doubted whether she'd really be well enough to attend. And so it was that yesterday I sat in front of my TV in Shifnal and Karin sat in front of her TV in Bristol and for the first, and probably last, time ever we watched the racing together, chatting on facebook.
I provided the tips and pretend expertise and Karin provided the winners by picking 'Andrew McCoy's' mount in the novice chase. As Taquin Du Seuil out-sprinted Oscar Whisky up the hill I could hear Karin's squeals from here. More than that, she seemed to be falling in love with the horses. Pretty, brave, strong. I said she should follow Tania Kindersley on twitter as she's all about the love with a little bit of gambling, whereas I'm all about the gambling with a little bit of love. Next thing I know she's all excited because Tania has tweeted back.
The whole experience was very touching.
Back on planet earth, today I'm going all Irish.
1:50 Spring Heeled 4pts win at 15/2
2:30 Hidden Cyclone 3pts ew at 18/1
Will probably throw darts at Finians Rainbow, Vino Griego and Astracad also.
Double them up with all the other Irish runners.
And, above all, enjoy the day...
